Volunteer attorneys and law students provide legal assistance to abused victims and their children by preparing the legal documents required to obtain temporary, and ultimately permanent, restraining orders which can include orders for custody, restricted visitation and child support. The Project also provides legal assistance to elderly individuals and to minor children seeking protection against sexual abuse by family members.

Family Court Services offers numerous services to the public with child custody and visitation issues. The Family Court Mediation Office provides an opportunity for parents to write their own custody and visitation plans. If parents cannot agree on a custody plan for their children, the Family Court Services Child Custody Evaluations Office may be ordered to provide the court and parents with information and recommendations. A fee may be charged for an evaluation. Additionally, the Family Court Services staff of mental health professionals offers child-focused programs for parents who are divorcing, separating or have children together. Parents and Children Together (PACT) is an educational program that assists parents in helping their children adjust to changes in their family and is mandatory for parents who have a custody and/or visitation dispute. Parenting Without Conflict is a six-week parent education program for high conflict families. Parents attend this program by court order. These programs are free.

The Family Law Information Center provides general family law information, referrals and assistance to self-represented parties. Parties are provided legal forms and procedural guidance in the areas of dissolution of marriage (divorces), legal separation, paternity cases and responses to domestic violence actions by a paralegal, under the supervision of an attorney. Operated by Public Counsel. The Guardianship Volunteer Project is open to people who need assistance with guardianships and conservatorships of the person. This program does not assist you if there is an estate or financial resources that you need the authority to manage. Volunteer attorneys and paralegals donate their time assisting people to complete and file the appropriate paperwork and informing them about the legal process. There are many forms necessary to file for guardianship so individuals should allow several hours to complete the process. A Spanish-speaking volunteer is usually available on Wednesday and Thursday.

The program offers free counseling re: debts and personal budgeting. Enrolling in a Debt Management Plan Agreement allows counselors from the program to contact your creditors and make arrangements on your behalf. You will pledge to make your deposits on time and not to incur any new debt, to help you regain your financial freedom. The consultation is free. There is a $75 fee for debt plan setup and educational materials. There is also a small monthly administration fee to cover the costs of handling accounts. The monthly administration fee is $20 or 6.5% of disbursements, whichever is less. All services are available online, by phone, and in person.

1. “Family Law Trial Preparation Clinic”
“If you and your spouse cannot agree on how to resolve the issues in your case, then you need to come to the preparation clinic”

Bring to the workshop: A list of all issues to be decided by the judge, your position on each and why. Information on value of your assets: car, house, bank accounts, collections, and any debts.
Minor children can not be present during workshop, however, there is a free children’s waiting room for children who are potty trained.
2. “Divorce Assistance for People without an Attorney”
A series of 3 workshops.
By Appointment Only.-Must sign up in Room 426, in advance
To be admitted into workshop one your must bring the following documents and information:
Your residence address and telephone number. Proof of your income: recent paycheck stubs, umemployment or worker’s compensation benefits, or documents to show you receive SSI, SSP, CalWORKS, Food Stamps, County Relief, General Relief or General Assistance. You need dates of marriage and separation. You need your children’s names, dates of birth and all addresses where the children have lived for the last five years. Information on any legal action concerning the children, including domestic violence actions and child support cases. And, a list of all debts, bills, assets, property and things to be divided from before and during marriage, and after separation (including those in your name alone, your spouse’s name alone, and both your names together)
3. “Prepare Your Declaration of Disclosure for Dissolution of Marriage or Legal Separation”
By Appointment Only.-Must sign up in Room 426
Bring to the workshop: Your income information: pay stubs, tax returns. Information on value of your assets: car, house, bank accounts, collections. Four $.41 cent stamps.
Minor children can not be present during workshop, however, there is a free children’s waiting room for children who are potty trained.
4. “Prepare Your Response to the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage or Legal Separation”
First and Third Friday of the Month. By Appointment Only.-Must sign up in Room 426
Bring to the Workshop: Copy of the Petition and accompanying paper. Your income information: pay stubs, tax returns. Information on value of your assets: car, house, bank accounts, and collections.
To prevent the default from being entered against you, your response should be filed with the court within 30 days of your receipt for the petition.
Minor children can not be present during workshop, however, there is a free children’s waiting room for children who are potty trained.
5. “Step Four” Preparation of Judgment Workshop for Contested Judgments
Workshop on held on Monday for almost the entire afternoon at the Resource Center, room 426. Workshops are by appointment only and space is limited to the first seven (7) prepared people.
To qualify you and your spouse must have gone to trial, the Court made orders and you have a copy of the minute order. Most minute orders are available a week after the court date. Usually the courtroom clerk will mail you a copy. If more than a week has passed, the workshop may be able to get you a copy of the minute order for you.
It is important that each party completes the “Declaration Regarding Service of Declaration of Disclosure and Income and Expense Declaration” (form FL 141) before the proposed judgment forms are sent to the courtroom for processing.

PATERNITY JUDGEMENT
1.”Preparation of Paternity Judgment”
Workshops are held every Thursday afternoon at the Resource Center. They are by appointment only, and will be made on a first come basis. It starts at 1:00 pm. You are encouraged to be there no later than 12:30 pm, to check in.
To be prepared, please have your case number, a copy of any minute order and/or Conciliation Agreements. Also, bring the following forms/items with you to the workshop: 1. If a default was entered against the other party, a copy of the filed “Request to Enter Default” (FL-165) and your “Income and Expense Declaration” (FL-150) if you filed one. 2. U.S. Postal Stamps (between 5 to 8)
* To qualify for a Default Paternity Judgment, you are the Petitioner and you have a filed copy of the “Request to Enter Default” (FL-165). If you are requesting monitored or supervised visitations or non-guideline child support, you will need to schedule a default hearing. They will help you with the form at the workshop.
** To qualify for a Stipulated Paternity Judgment, both parties have appeared in the action one parent filed the “Petition to Establish Parental Relationship”), and agree on all issues (child custody, child visitation, and child support). Only one parent needs to be present at the workshop.
*** To qualify for a Contested Judgment, you and the other parent have gone to trial, the Court made orders and you have a copy of the minute order. Bring to the Workshop: Copy of temporary restraining order (domestic violence prevention) and any other documents you were served with or received because of this case. Your income information: pay stubs, tax returns, if the other party is seeking child or spousal support.
